Types of Glass Sculptures

Glass sculptures come in a great variety of colours, designs and sizes. You can choose from modern art/contemporary sculptures, traditional sculptures, abstract sculptures, statues, and corporate and public art sculptures. The mastery of artists over this medium has made possible the most intricate designs in glass.

One of the greatest advantages of glass sculptures is that they can be made in one or more colours. The transparent quality of glass lends a special beauty to the colours, making the entire glass sculpture seem almost surreal. When light plays with the colours of your glass sculpture, you will find a new beauty in it from time to time.

How Are They Made

Glass is not an easy material to cut and mould. Its fragility makes it susceptible to breaking or cracking. To create glass sculptures, some of the processes used are:

  • Glassblowing
  • Hot Sculpting
  • Cold working

In Glassblowing, molten glass is put into a pipe from which it flows down in a semi-solid stateeither by blowing on the pipe or slanting it.In this state, tools and movementis used to mould glass into beautiful glass shapes and designs.

In Hot Sculpting, a similar method as in Glassblowing is used except that no blowing takes place. Molten glass is put in a pipe and the artist turns the semi-solid glass that flows out from it into a piece of glass art.

Cold Working, as its name suggests, is working with glass when it is cold. A number of tools and techniques can be used to cut glass into the desired shape such asdiamond saw and files, sandblasting, grinding and polishing. Engravingsare also done on glass when it is cold.

All Glass orCombined with Metals

Glass sculptures can be made solely with glass or combined with metals such as bronze, titanium and gold. Depending upon your specific needs, we design your glass sculpture to perfection, making your dream art piece a real decoration at your place. You can have the base of metal over which glass can be used at appropriate places. If not, you can have the entire sculpture designed in glass.

The advantage of combining metal with glass is that it gives the sculpture more strength. Especially in sculptures of very large sizes, a combination of materials is used to give it the required toughness, especially if it is to be kept outdoors. Smaller sculptures, on the other hand, can be made solely with glass. Therefore, depending upon the size of your bespoke glass sculpture, you can consider using all glass or a combination of glass and metal.
